Mario Brothers Birthday Party-Jackson is Five!

Whew you guys, this weekend was crazy! We celebrated Jackson turning five with a Mario Brothers birthday party, and had so much to pack in. After lots of busy weekends, we finally had a chance to head up to the lake, and we couldn’t pass it up. Of course, Jackson was also adamant about having a birthday party. While he wanted a day at the lake, he also REALLY didn’t want to give up a party. With him starting school this year, we may be at the end of the family birthday parties, and FIVE is a big deal, so how could I say no!? So, after a FULL day of swimming on Saturday and letting him pick whatever he wanted for lunch (macaroni and chicken nuggets, of course), we got home around 10pm. We were up bright and early to get everything ready for his Mario brothers birthday party, and he had SO much fun! He is at that age where he looks forward to things for months in advance. I lost count of how many times this weekend he asked me ‘am I actually five’ or ‘is today actually my party’. He is just so darn smart, and so darn BIG, and nothing makes me happier than seeing him happy!

This party was a welcome change of pace from the Spider-Man world I have been living in for the past six months or so 😉 Mike pulled out his old Super Nintendo a few months ago, and when the boys are good we let them play a little bit of Super Mario. I secretly love it, because while I do not like video games very much, I am not sure anyone can say no to a classic like Mario! You won’t find me getting upset when Jackson asks me to help him beat a level 😉 The boys loved that I did some fun crafts for his Mario Brothers birthday party, and they were so easy!

Do not let their faces fool you. We wanted a fun brothers picture, so naturally Lincoln stuck his hands inside of his overalls and Jackson tried to look serious. #boymom I found their hats at Party City, and got Jackson’s overalls here and Lincoln’s here.

The DIY Projects

mario brothers birthday party

I had the brick plastic leftover from Jackson’s Ninja Turtle party last year, and wrapped square boxes with it to look like the bricks from the video game. The other boxes are just yellow wrapping paper, and I cut the question marks out of construction paper!

The mushrooms were SO easy to make. I purchased a six pack of round mylar balloons online. To assemble, I inflated them with a straw. Then, I cut out white circles on a piece of paper and taped them on top! For the base, I cut and rolled a piece of poster board and taped it with clear tape. They were SO easy and the boys played with them all week long!

I went real fancy with his birthday cake and cupcakes, with a trip to the grocery store and put in a rush order! While I love fancy cakes, but life has been so crazy lately that easy bakery cakes have been our go to lately. Jackson was thrilled with it because there was a picture of Mario jumping on top!mario brothers birthday party
How darling is this cake topper!? I found it on Etsy, and the shop owner was SO sweet and shipped it out to me right away to ensure I had it on time. Again, nothing like waiting until the last minute! The details were absolutely fantastic, and it dressed up the cake so much!

I whipped up these cookies earlier in the week, and the boys loved them! I always use this recipe because it requires no chilling. This icing is my go-to always, the glaze dries perfectly and is so good! The black eyes were an easy addition that I piped on with a basic black frosting from the grocery store!
We stuck to chips, potato salad, and sloppy joes for the meal. I have really started to focus on having one dedicated ‘decorated spot’ for parties. Doing this takes so much stress out of planning. For the longest time I always wanted every space looking perfect. That isn’t realistic when you are feeding a bunch of kids! But, trust me when I say that the food was delicious and everyone left full 🙂

Pin The Mustache On The Mario

mario brothers birthday party
This little party game was so fun and easy to do! I just printed this free PDF at Walgreens and cut out mustaches on black posterboard. Jackson got it right on the spot, he may or may not have peeked 😉  Lincoln refused to participate. I am baffled every day by how different my boys are in what they will/will not do! The rest of the kids all gave it a go though, it was so cute to watch!

I am not sure how many more years I have of taking pictures with boy of the boys in our arms. I have been holding Jackson as much as I can lately. Babies don’t keep!

This picture makes me smile so big. Hands full, hearts fuller. These boys are everything I am so lucky to call them mine!

My sweet boy just wouldn’t smile for any of these fun pictures! In the photo above he was hitting the box to get mushroom power and become bigger 😉 Happy birthday Jackson, we love you to the moon and back!

Ninja Turtle Birthday Party: Jackson Is Four!

This weekend we had the best time celebrating Jackson’s 4th birthday! We have always done birthday parties on Saturday afternoons, but since his actual birthday fell on a Friday this year, we decided to go with it. And I loved how it went keeping it more low key! While we love cooking and preparing food, I always think it makes it so hard to focus on decorating and cleaning when you are also making a mess in the kitchen! So we did the ultimate in lazy, and ordered pizza. It was, after all, a Ninja Turtle birthday party, and ALL they like to eat is pizza, right!? I placed the order about an hour before we planned to eat, and aside from throwing some chips into a few bowls and picking up the cake, I had NO food to prep. You guys, it was AMAZING. There was also NO clean up. Am I allowed to order pizza from now on for every single party?

The Ninja Turtle Birthday Party Decor

The most labor intensive project for this party was putting up this faux brick wallpaper. I purchased it on Amazon, and it came in a HUGE sheet and was easy to cut. It was almost like a plastic table cloth in terms of feel. I was able to get it to stay on the wall by putting painters tape flat on various spots on the wall, and then placing a piece of duct tape on top of that to get it to stick! I used our wall under the staircase, which is angled. So, I had to cut a few pieces and it got a bit tedious to get them to all match up together. However, it was 100% worth it when Jackson woke up and thanked me up and down for making him a ‘turtle wall’. I will also say that if you put it up on a square wall with no angles, it would be much easier!

The adorable Pizza Garland was an Etsy find! Jackson kept playing with it, which is why it is a bit uneven in some photos 😉 And the FOUR balloons were just individual letter balloons I picked up. They come with little holes on top to put string through so you can spell whatever you want! I was honestly pretty relieved when Jackson asked for a ninja turtle birthday party; it is a pretty common theme and I had a LOT of options for decor ideas!

How cute is Jackson’s FOUR shirt!? I was able to customize the colors (because he ONLY wanted things with Michelangelo, of course) and I was so thrilled with how this one turned out!

I have started making the boys felt crowns on their birthdays! It has been so much fun to make them a crown that is EXACTLY what they want, and the materials to pull these together comes in at less than $5 a piece!

I once again grabbed a cake from Little Nuggets Bakery, and decided to try cake pops this time, too! Kimberly is the absolute SWEETEST, and is so gifted at cake decorating! Seriously, how cute are those cake pops!?

For those of you that grew up on Rugrats, Jackson has discovered REPTAR and I found this stuffed one online! He LOVES it, and I am kind of loving him finding a show I watched as a kid!

My favorite letterboard from Mcleod Letter Co! I didn’t get too creative with it, but it is always the most perfect piece to add to bring something extra to a party display!

I imagine one day we will capture a family photo with all four of us looking AND smiling, but this was NOT that day. Family photos with toddlers are no joke!

These pictures of Lincoln KILLLLLL me. Clearly he did not get the memo that it wasn’t his birthday, but he was too cute to burst his bubble. He went and posed by the table and said cheese, and I had to snap some pictures. He also insisted on wearing the crown I made for his birthday back in May. Whatever floats your boat, little guy!

Once we ate our pizza we sang happy birthday. Jackson was SO excited! It has been so much fun this past year seeing how excited he gets over everything. Celebrating babies is great, but they don’t really get it. At the age Jackson is now, he understands what is going on and it makes it so much FUN to make things special and magical for him.

These brothers, melt my heart!

For any ladies in the market for a Ninja Turtles shirt, you can find my tank here!

We finished up the night by opening gifts, and called it a night! Like I said, with nothing but cake and pizza boxes, clean up was a breeze and I had ZERO dishes to do! It was such a great day celebrating our sweet, big FOUR year old with his ninja turtle birthday party!

Two-Rex: A Dinosaur Birthday Party!

This past weekend, we celebrated our little Lincoln turning TWO! I cannot believe how quickly the time has gone; every birthday is a little bit heartbreaking, but this is the first time in nearly four years where it really doesn’t feel like we have a ‘baby’ in the house anymore. Cue all of the mommy tears. Our little CInco De Mayo baby is a lover of all things dinosaur, so while ‘Linco De Mayo’ is too good to pass up, we had to have a party focused on what little man loves. I had so much planning his ‘Two-Rex’x party. We did more of a jungle theme last year for his Wild One party, so I decided to go with more bright, bold colors for our little dinosaur this time around. I had so much fun pulling together this dinosaur birthday party, and despite his grumpy face in any pictures I asked for, he had SO much fun with all of our family who came to celebrate!

The Details

Last year I made Lincoln a homemade Wild One crown, and he just found it in his room and has been wearing it around the house. I decided to treat him to a new one this year and am IN LOVE with how it turned out. It was so easy to make, too.

These cupcakes had ‘monster cookie frosting’ and it was as delicious as it sounds! And my favorite shop Glitter Party Co. once again nailed it with the cupcake and cake toppers!

The Party

Seriously, why are family photos with toddlers impossible?

My sweet boy was SO excited when he woke up from his nap and saw his dinosaur birthday party all set up. This table was so much fun to put together. Of course, the balloons were his personal favorite. That and the green dinosaur figurine!

Don’t let that face fool you; this boy LOVED his dinosaur birthday party. Every time I asked my sweet boy to say ‘cheese’ he immediately got SO mad at me. He was too busy playing with all of the toys and having all of the fun to stop and smile for me, apparently.

He LOVED opening gifts this year. His favorites were of course the small balloon which was a part of the wrapping paper, and the light up dinosaur that ROARS. It is so much fun seeing him really start to get excited and enjoy parties!

He was SO excited to blow out his candles, and was so disappointed when mommy finally helped that I had to relight one of the candles for him to continue blowing it out. My BIG, independent two year old!

I would just like to point out that this is the epitome of what our family pictures look like at this stage in life. NEVER are we all looking, but their faces are still adorable so I don’t mind 😉

I just love this sweet boy, and want to bottle up his innocence and joy at this stage. Happy second birthday to our Lincoln!

It’s Birthday Week!

Jackson turns three this week. Three. Three hurts my heart a little bit more than one and two did. I know it is only going to get harder every year. You think the time can’t go any faster than it is, and suddenly the are all little boy and nearly every bit of baby you remember seeing in their face just a short time ago is gone. This sweet boy has become so full of life and personality. He loves to pretend to be a dinosaur, loves minions more than anything else, and loves to make play pretend and make believe.
When I saw this book, I knew immediately that I needed it for Jackson to celebrate his special day this year. We already have a personalized name book for Lincoln, and with Jackson’s birthday right around the corner it was the perfect opportunity to treat him to a new story made just for him.

In this book, a little boy loses his birthday, and goes on a journey to get it back, all the while learning about the days and months that go into each year. The customized details are so precious, I teared up when I first read it. From finding the numbers that create your child’s birth year, to using ‘King August’ to help him find his birthday, every page of this book was made exactly for Jackson. He loves it!

Can we just talk about his stare for a minute? Those dark eyes and innocent little expression  are just about more than I can handle. He is growing up before our eyes, yet he really is still so little. Now if only I could keep him that way. I do know that we have found a precious keepsake in this book; I am already looking forward to reading it with him every year for his birthday. It’s one of those little treasures that I am so happy to have!

Dear Lincoln

My sweet baby boy,

You are one. I can barely believe the words as I type them. This has, without a doubt, been the fastest year of my life, and it seems unfair that your first year passed by in the blink of an eye. And while it has gone by so quickly, I already feel like I cannot remember your newborn days. Sometimes that is a blessing, because those first few months were hard. You, my sweet boy, were not exactly an easy baby to deal with. You cried a lot. you never wanted to be put down, and yet you also never wanted to be held. There were few moments when you were content. In the thick of it, I sometimes thought we would never get to better days. And then, magically, one day I was able to hold you, and you relaxed into my body, and finally I was able to truly start cuddling you, snuggling you, and getting to know you. I haven’t looked back since.
You are so sweet that it almost hurts. Your daddy calls you ‘cheeser’, and with good reason. Ever since you started crawling, it is a common sight to see you coming at us with the biggest cheese face we have ever seen, so proud of whatever trouble you are undoubtedly getting into. And speaking of trouble, my goodness, I do not even know where to begin. You are my sweet little man, but my gosh do you know how to get into things! You love phone chargers, wall outlets, knocking over furniture, and chasing the vacuum. You have absolutely no fear, but also get pretty darn angry when your plans don’t go according to plan and it results in you taking a tumble. You are 100% our wild child, and while you are the cause of a gray hair or two, I love your fierce independence and desire to explore.

You also are very aware of your voice and how to use it. While we rarely heard your brother cry or scream, we became very familiar and conditioned to your cries and screams from early on. You used your screams to communicate any frustrations, and we learned to know when they meant you needed something, and when you were simply working through something. You may be our second child, but you have ended up being an entirely new, and very big, learning experience for me and your daddy. You are such proof that every child is so unique and different, and it has been such a joy to watch you make sure to remind us of that every single day for the past year.

Your strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, and dimples are something I will always be amazed by. You are so beautiful, the picture perfect baby, the blonde haired blue eyed child I never imagined I would have. I constantly look at you, amazed that you are mine. Being your mommy is one of my greatest blessings. I watch you alongside your brother, cut from the same cloth and yet so vastly different, and swell with emotion. You love each other so much, but also push each other’s buttons, as I imagine any set of rough and tough brothers would. You love to follow him around, and are overcome with glee when he takes down the baby gate, encouraging you to follow him upstairs when he knows mom isn’t looking. This week, the three of us were cuddled in bed in the early morning, and Jackson was on a mission to give you the biggest kiss, giggling the entire time. You, of course, were more focused on eating, but your love for each other is something I pray continues throughout your entire life. You two are going to get into lots of trouble together, but you are also going to have so much fun.

I want to remember every last detail about you at this age. You are curious and into everything, yet you are still so sweet and innocent. Those little dimples on your fingers, and those baby rolls on your wrists. I love the way you babble when I feed you before bedtime, and the way you breathing turns over as you drift off to sleep. You adore putting on your ‘snuggy’ before bed, and love to cuddle under your blanket as we settle in for an episode of Mickey Mouse. You are beginning to shake your head no, and can also point at things you are intrigued by, and it is the cutest thing ever. And, I am going to go ahead and say that your first word (said with intent) was definitely mama. You usually say it when you are sleepy or want to be picked up, but nothing makes me happier than hearing you say that sweet word. You are stubborn and have little desire to start walking, and yet I know that once you do, we won’t be able to keep up. We are in no rush; you stay little as long as you would like.

There are no words to describe my love for you, Lincoln. You have taught me so much, and are an absolute joy to be around. Now please, stop growing up, just a little bit. Although I know the years are going to continue going faster and faster. You are my baby, and I love you from the bottom of my heart.

Happy birthday baby boy!

Love,

Mom

Lincoln: One Year Photos

I don’t know if one could look any cuter. This little boy is our wild one, and I figured there is no more perfect theme to suit us celebrating his first birthday. These pictures are such a perfect example of who he is at this exact stage; a little bit sassy, not one bit inclined to pose for the camera, but so darn sweet.
